Christian John Onufer lived in Teton Village, WY. He was 42 years old when he and his ski partner, Steve Romeo, died in an avalanche on March 8th, 2012 in Grand Teton National Park. Chris was born in Plainfield, NJ to Anne and John Onufer. Prior to relocation to Jackson, WY, Chris moved with his family from Cranford, NJ to Mequon, WI, and later to Andover MA, where he graduated high school. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Recreational Management at the University of Maine - Machias Campus. Chris developed his career with Jackson Hole Mountain Resort during a 19 year period, progressing from lift operator to Manager of Tram Maintenance. He also served the community through the Teton Village Fire Department, becoming a Lieutenant. He was also an associate member of Jackson Hole Fire/EMS, as an EMT and first responder. Chris' love of the Teton Mountains, lakes and oceans provided the opportunities to become a backcountry skier, mountaineer, climber, paraglider and sailor. He was a marathon runner and an Ironman triathlete. Surviving Chris are Anne and John Onufer, mother and father; Jane Onufer Sosa, sister; Oscar Sosa, brother-and-law; Isabella, niece; Christian and Nicholas, nephews; Anna Fedorochko, grandmother; Dolores and Richard Waller, Carol and Raymond Block, aunts, uncles and their families.
A Celebration of Chris' life is planned for Tuesday March 13th 2012, at 6:00 PM in the Teton Village Commons.
